5th Grade Math Units
Unit 1 Numerical Expressions and Multiplication & Division of Whole Numbers
In this unit, students will be learning daily routines and procedures for engaging in mathematical practices. Students will use, write, interpret, and evaluate numerical expressions with whole numbers, including the use of exponents. Order of Operations is an integral part of this work. Students will use properties of place value & multiples of 10 to simplify and solve problems. They will use the standard algorithm for multiplication to find the product of multi-digit whole numbers and be able to divide multi-digit whole numbers using strategies based on place value, order of operations, and the relationship between multiplication and division.

Unit 2 Geometry, Volume, and Addition & Subtraction of Fractions
In this unit, students understand attributes of 2D figures can belong to multiple categories and subcategories of shapes. They use this understanding to classify shapes into a hierarchy of categories. Students recognize and understand the concept of volume as filling a figure with unit cubes and counting them. Using their counting strategies, they come to understand volume as the area of the base times the height with single and composite figures. Students apply Grade 4 concepts of equivalent fractions and common multiples to find common denominators. Using this understanding, students add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with line and unlike denominators, using fraction models and equations to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Unit 3 Rational Numbers, Addition & Subtraction of Decimals & Fractions, and Coordinate Plane
In this unit, students will learn how to shift the decimal place when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10. They will expand their knowledge of rational numbers to include the thousandths place and use this knowledge to compare numbers. Students will use models and diagrams to add and subtract decimals. They will continue to use knowledge of equivalent fractions to solve addition and subtraction problems in and out of context. Students will learn to plot points on a coordinate plane. They will use the coordinate plane to solve real world problems.

Unit 4 Multiplication & Division of Decimals
In this unit, students will use their knowledge of multiplying and dividing whole numbers and apply it to multiplying and dividing decimals. Prior to solving, students will use their place value knowledge to estimate an approximate solution. When they find the exact solution, they will use base ten blocks and pictures to represent and solve operations with decimals.

Unit 5 Multiplication & Division of Fractions and Numerical Expressions
In this unit, students will expand their knowledge on operations with fractions. In 4th grade, students learned to multiply whole numbers and fractions. In 5th grade, students will learn to multiply fraction values including mixed numbers. This will be completed using models and diagrams. Multiplication will move to a standard procedure. Students will increase their knowledge of division by learning how to divide a whole number by a unit fraction and a unit fraction by a whole number. Division will be completed using models and diagrams. Students will then use, write, interpret, and evaluate numerical expressions with whole and rational numbers, including the use of exponents. Order of operations is an integral part of this work.

Unit 6 Numerical Patterns & Measurement Conversions
In this unit, students generate numerical patterns and create ordered pairs using two rules and identify the relationship between corresponding terms. Students graph ordered pairs on a coordinate plane while understanding the coordinate system. The work in this unit lays the groundwork for solving one and two-step expressions and equations in Grade 6. Students convert customary and metric units of length, weight, and capacity to solve multi-step real-world problems. They will also convert among different sized units within the same measurement system (large to small / small to large).
